Meet Jess

A teddy bear lives in our house.
She is called Jess.

I recently introduced our dog Pip (the slightly strange one) so now it's time to get you acquainted with Jess.

Kiwi Good Life - Vicki AnnisonJess is our first kiwi dog and we got her almost five years ago when we'd truly settled down in our first New Zealand house. I tell you... when you've moved half way around the world and things often seem uncertain - there's nothing quite like a dog to make you feel like you've settled down and found your home.

Jess came from
a local farm and was duly romping around the fields with the rest of her gang when we went to buy her. No pet shop special recipe mixed breeds for us. Although she is a bit of a mix it has to be said: Bichon Frise / Poodle / Lhasa Apso.

We liked the idea of a non-malting dog - what we didn't take into account was the grooming and clipping she would need later. I swear we pay out more for her groomer than we do for my hairdresser!

But hair issues aside, she is a beautiful, loving and devoted family pet. Who can sometimes be a little bit stubborn (She just likes to take her time to make her own mind up).

She settled in quickly and just loved to be part of the family. Three kids and a good size garden helped keep her busy but she was not so happy when we decided to build her a dog pen when we left her to go to work and school. Every day she chewed up a little bit more of the home we'd built to keep her safe and secure while we were out. Every day it got patched up. One day there was a higher percentage of patches than original building and we decided to fence the garden off so she could have the run of this instead. She seemed a little happier with this situation.

Basically, she has to be where we are and then she's happy. Literally.
No doors shall come between us. No body of water shall separate us. No vehicle will be an obstacle.

Very unhappy that her people had gone off without her....

She would get herself so worked up when she couldn't be with us that after a year we decided to get her a pet of her own - and that's how little Pip ended up being part of the family :)

The two are best buddies and while Jess still stakes her claim very close to her people, if we're not about she's happy to take control of Pip and acts like its her job to keep a watchful eye on her.

She couldn't be happier than when everyone's home and safe, and she can relax.

Another Jess 'thing' - she''ll never sit under a bench - she has to sit on it!
